Centre-Part
Wellington, NZ
2018
Reclaiming the under-used side yard of a large existing 1930s house, Centre-Part is a three-storey infill home, propped on top of an existing retaining wall and anchored back into the landscape beyond.
An entryway, garage, and workshop wrap back from the street-edge retaining wall which creates a podium level where the main volume of the home and its surrounding landscaping rest.
The semi-open lower level houses the kitchen, living and dining over a split level divided by a screened stair. Large doors open to the deck and gardens, creating a light, transparent lower base to the main mass of the house.
A timber clad upper-level shields sleeping and ablution spaces from the street, but is parted down the middle, revealing a vertical stripe of glazing allowing views to Wellington City.
